Usually (unless you're my offspring or younger sibling) I'm not one to be bossy, but I was recently made aware of something that I have come to believe is very important. You may have heard of the Pepsi Refresh Project. Pepsi is giving away millions of dollars to people, companies, and organizations to help fund some brilliant ideas. They have six different categories (health, arts & culture, food & shelter, the planet, neighborhoods, and education) and over 1200 ideas currently submitted.
Last week, Meeko at The Ramblings of a Disgruntled Secretary posted about his Uncle Sherman's idea - recycling used vegetable oil into biodiesel! I don't know how many of you have ever worked in or run a restaurant, but do you have any idea how much vegetable oil is thrown away weekly in an average restaurant? The amount is even larger in a fast food enviornment! Restaurant owers pay loads of money for companies to take the oil and dispose of it. A company that took the oil at no cost and processed it into a green energy source would be AMAZING!
On top of this process saving restaurant owners money, accoding to The Globalist.com, biofuel production is an excellent source of jobs in a community, and decreases greenhouse gas emissions. Green America Today says, "Studies show that biodiesel outperforms gasoline, ethanol, and conventional diesel in reducing climate-altering carbon dioxide emissions and in overall fuel-efficiency."
Really, what more do you need to know? In the current political climate of our world, reducing dependency on foreign oil is critical to our country's properity. Also, by creating ways for biofuel production to become more mainstream, we can help prevent future disasters like the oil spill in the Gulf!
Meeko is running a contest on his page, if you'd like to join, just for supporting his Uncle Sherman. I don't want him to spend $10 on a giftcard for me, so vote for Sherman and enter Meeko's giveaway!
